No guarantees or safe places. No one could be trusted, everyone was a suspect. All money is worthless. That was how things were now. Chaos reigned supreme in Capeton. However Furgeson Rural was peaceful as ever. Few people had lived there, and some of them had left the area. There were still good people and bad people. Some of them just wanted to be left alone. Others kept their distance from certain residents, but preyed on unsuspecting survivors passing through.
In this part of the county Jack was a ghost. Occasionally he would pause to listen or to examine a strange track. The muzzle of his shotgun ready to answer the first sign of a threat. That alone was a more than adequate way of dealing with such a thing. He started moving again, carefully stepping over a fallen log. Being snake bit once was all it took to remind one to be cautious. Not to mention scraping against it left a trail. Something he did not want to leave.
His gaze drifted across the ground once more. A single half of a sunflower seed hull caused him to freeze. Very slowly he eased himself to the ground. Motioning for his companions to do the same. So the crazy bastard is back, he thought. Even though it was possible the person Jack knew of had passed on it was more than enough reason for him to remain motionless. Scanning the area for the silhouette of a human or the glare off a scope.
With fall a month around the corner was the hottest part of the summer. Upper eighties and climbing. It seemed strange that there wasn't a single bead of sweat dripping from his brow. That gave him the advantage while moving through the lush vegetation. If anyone was hidden close by in the foliage he would smell them. Unfortunately sunset was only hours away.
When there were no signs of anyone he slowly got up from the ground. He still had a long way to go. Even when they reached the stream safety wasn't guaranteed. A reminder every time he settled down for a few days. Hopefully no one had stumbled onto his camp. Like his former employer had said before 'Hope don't float.' At least the dead have no use for what is there, he thought.

Arian followed the stranger with quite ease. Him being the the only person she's seen for a long while, she was willing to follow him to the end of the earth and back without a single question. For most of their trek, Arian kept quiet. She kept her pistol in hand, but didn't bother to ready it. Along with her, the trip was quiet, Arian liked the quiet. It, in it's eery-ness, reminded her that not all of the world was in chaos. That humanity had a chance, but moments within thinking this Avian usually realises that the screeching of those things would never end.
Durring their venture, something caused Jack to freeze with Arian almost running into him. He dropped down to the ground quickly, but without a sound. He motioned her to do the same. Obediently, and without question, she followed him and dropped down into a crouch. For a minute he servey their surroundings and slowly the worry left his face. As he stood up again, Arian followed and leaning forward to get a look.
"What was it?" She asked readying her pistol.

"Nothing... Thought there was someone else around here. Just my imagination." he lied. He didn't want to scare anyone. Knowing that someone who hunted other humans was in the area would probably cause them to panic. Even if they didn't people sometimes got clumsy when under stress. That could get them all killed.
"Won't be long before we reach my camp." he whispered. Moving on he wove in and out between the trees. Wincing as he stepped on a small branch that made a cracking sound. Bringing the shotgun up once more he listened. No sounds of anyone talking or the ghoulish shriek of the infected. Nothing crashing through the brush running in their direction. Maybe I'm too paraniod, he thought.
Soon the ground had begun to slope downward. Bringing his hand up as a signal to stop he closed his eyes. Off in the distance was the faint sound of water running across the rocks. "Hear that?" he asked opening his eyes. Slinging the across his back he started to slowly make his way down into the small valley. Grabbing hold of the small trees growing out to keep himself from sliding down the steep grade. "Watch yourself climbing down. Last thing we need is a sprained ankle or broken leg." he warned.

Arian followed Jack precisely. She even took to his exact foot steps. And a blind man could tell how cautious he was being. Especially when he stepped on a decaying branch that had probably fallen a while ago. It cracked loudly and echoed into the distance. Something was obviously bothering him, but Arian made sure to pretend that she didn't notice.
Arian paused to Jacks question. Focusing on her ears, Arian concentrated. Strangely, she was too afraid to close her eyes, unlike her companion. "I don't hear anything," she whispered, and continued to follow. The terrain was getting steep now and slick. The ground vegetation was thickening rapidly. Arian realized now what Jack was listening for. A river. Or a creek. Some sort of running water source. And from there, Arian could figure it out. The dead can't swim, or they just don't. At least swimming in a river would be harder for someone who's lost most of their motor skills.
She slipped her gun into it's holster, and she took heed to Jacks words. A broken leg would surely be fatal with the circumstances. With both hands, she grip a couple of roots the were poking out from the mossy ground. She tucked in her feet and sat on her heels prevent herself from slipped. From there she extended a leg and panted it into the ground, securely, or so she hoped. Close by was a rotting log with a dead branch Arian figured she could support herself with. Shifted her weight to her other foot, she make slight mistake. She misjudged the slickness of the slop, and her foot slipped out from under her. Falling on her butt, Arian hit her tailbone on the rock that was suppose to be holding her foot. She let out a pained cry, and before she could grab onto something, she went tumbling down the slope, hitting everything in her path along the way.

Stepping out from behind a tree Jack crouched and slid the rest of the way down. "Hang on!" he called out. A leg injury he could take care of although it would restrict their ability to travel. Broken ribs, he didn't know what to do. A very serious injury with no hospital to go to. Arian would either pull through or she would not make it. Hopefully her injuries were limited to a few scrapes and bruises.
Making it to the bottom of the hill he started over to help Arian up. Only to pause a few feet away from her and unsling his shotgun. The stream was only twenty yards from where he was standing. It wasn't the time right time for him to let down his guard. Then again there was never a time to do so. "You okay?" he asked helping her up.

The way Arian landed wasn't very comfortable looking. She landed on her face, but luckily, the ground was soft and there wasn't and injury from that. Her back had flipped over her head in the tumble, though, and sprained her neck. One legs was sprawled out and severely twist out of place. For a moment, she lay there in shock, and didn't move. After a short moment, she came to again and gasped in pain. Holding her breathing for moments at a time and gasping, Arian resisted the urge to scream in her pain. She lurched and writhled in pain that mainly focused in her spine and her left leg(the strangely twisted one). But moving only envoked more pain upon herself.
The pain and the urge were too great and a couple of quick screeches did escape from her throat. She tried to answer Jack, but she was unable to talk through her black wall or pain. Soon, nausea engulfed Arian. Gasping for air, she swallowed and worked to keep the little food in her stomach down. Although, the pain of the moment quickly subsided and all that was left was the pulsing pain in her leg, that she was pretty sure was broken, or just badly sprained. There was also the pain that resided in her neck from the landing, she might have sprained that too. She whimpered a bit.
After a moment, she sputtered. "Leg. My neck." Warily, she brought up a hand to rub her neck, but it reacted in a sharp pain of damaged muscle that would surely tense up soon.

"You'll be fine. I've seen people take worst spills than that and walk away. Might be good to keep weight off of that foot. Just for good measure." he explained. A little bit of a hyperbole on his part. Only personal experience told him people could go the extra mile with a little encouragement. "We're almost there. Just hang on to me." he said pulling Arian's arm around his neck so she could shift some of her weight onto his shoulders.
Hopefully nothing would force them to leave in a hurry. Once he dug up the other crate he had stashed he would be better equipped for a fight should one occur. There wasn't much there. Just an automatic pistol with several magazines. A welcome addition to the six shots he had with the shotgun. He pushed all those thoughts out of his mind. A warm meal is better than any conflict right now, he thought.
